‘My family is under imminent threat’ – Afghan translator who worked for NZ Defence makes plea to Government for extended family to come

A Hamilton-based Afghani family says the New Zealand Defence Force fallout continues in Afghanistan, as their eight-year-old nephew was killed, and five-year-old nephew injured, in Afghanistan four days ago.

Parwiz Ilyas Hakimi brought his wife and three children to New Zealand in 2013.

His work as an interpreter for New Zealand forces in Bamyan Afghanistan, had made him a potential target.

Since then, he says, the Taliban has instead threatened his parents, brothers and sisters.

Hakimi says he has pleaded with the New Zealand government to accept his wider family as refugees, but says it fell on deaf ears.

On March 18 this year, Hakimi says a bomb killed his nephew aged 8 and injured his brother aged five.

“I don’t know how to ask for help from the New Zealand government. How much more do I have to pay for what I have done with the New Zealand Defence Force?”
